Erie County

  • Amherst, NY: Amherst is a large, spread-out town, so for many older adults the biggest aging-in-place challenge is transportation and staying connected once driving gets harder.
  • Buffalo, NY: In the City of Buffalo, aging in place usually comes down to three things: older homes with stairs, getting to appointments, and winter.
  • Clarence, NY: Clarence is a large, partly rural town east of Amherst, so distance is the main aging-in-place challenge: longer drives to appointments, longer driveways to clear, and neighbors farther apart.
  • Hamburg, NY: The Town of Hamburg includes two villages and a stretch of Lake Erie shoreline, so services and travel times can differ by neighborhood.
  • Kenmore, NY: Kenmore is a village inside the Town of Tonawanda, so many senior programs are run by the town rather than the village.
  • Orchard Park, NY: Orchard Park is a Southtowns community where winter, driving distance and home upkeep tend to drive the aging-in-place decision.
  • Tonawanda, NY: "Tonawanda" can mean two different places: the Town of Tonawanda (which includes Kenmore) and the separate City of Tonawanda, each with its own services.
  • Williamsville, NY: Williamsville is a village inside the Town of Amherst, so many senior programs your parent can use are run by the town, not the village.

Niagara County

  • Lockport, NY: Lockport is the Niagara County seat, and the City of Lockport and Town of Lockport are separate municipalities.
  • Niagara Falls, NY: Niagara Falls is in Niagara County, not Erie County, so Medicaid, the Office for the Aging and NY Connects all run through Niagara County offices.
  • North Tonawanda, NY: North Tonawanda is in Niagara County, across the canal from the City of Tonawanda in Erie County.
