Start with function, not age

Age alone does not answer whether someone can live alone. Look at how the person moves through the home, manages everyday routines, gets food and transportation, communicates with family and responds when something changes.

Look for patterns

One unusual day is different from a pattern of missed meals, repeated falls, confusion, unopened mail, missed appointments or increasing isolation. Document what you are actually seeing.

Build the least-restrictive plan first

If the person wants to remain home, identify what support could reduce risk before assuming a move is the only option. That may include family routines, technology, transportation, home modifications or qualified outside services.
